Frequently Asked Questions

Photos on canvas, Photos on fine art papers & Photos on Archival photo papers.

We use 7-color Advanced printing technology with Ultachrome ink (Rated for up to 70 years print life under proper conditions) for the finest quality Giclée prints. Color quality is exceptional compared to standard 4-color printers. Print resolution up to 2880 dpi.

UV Protection:

This is something that my suppliers assure us is not necessary with our canvas stock. That is not to say that ALL canvas has the light fastness rating that ours does or that the UV sprays are not needed all the time. In fact, most of the canvas out there for this application (Epson, bulldog, etc…) will need to have the extra protection, as they do not offer the protective coating that our canvas does. With the combination of our high quality coated canvas and our Ultachrome pigmented inks, our prints should last 60-80 years under proper circumstances.

About our canvas

Instant Dry Satin Canvas represents the latest in micro porous coating technology partnered with an artist canvas designed for the professional. The 19-mil, woven, cotton fabric is ideal for fine art reproductions that will be stretched and mounted. This instant dry coating is water-resistant, highly resistant to cracking and is compatible with dye and pigment based inks.

About our ink:

Ultachrome is a new ink formulation implemented with the Stylus Pro Series. This ink is for professional photography and fine art printing and has an expected longevity of up to 75 years, depending on display conditions.

With all that said, you can coat the print with a UV spray if you feel it needs additional protection. We recommend Premiere Art Spray which is formulated for the canvases and ink set that we use here at Archive Angel.

Here are some guidelines to be reviewed for your complete satisfaction from your Photos on Canvas and other fine art stocks.

Slides and negatives give the overall best results as we can scan them up to 4000 DPI. Prints should be a minimum print size of 3" x 5" and a maximum of 8½" x 11" for best results. Although we can improve the quality in many cases, Clean, undamaged photographs make the best prints. They may be color or black and white.

Avoid excessive light or dark photographs.

Copyright Protected Photos will require a permission waiver to reproduce the photos.

Frequently Asked Questions . . .

What's included?

1. Professional scan of your photo.
2. Minor retouching for a super clean image.
3. Exposure correction so the highlights, whites, blacks, and shadows are what they should be.
4. Sharpen the image for the best definition possible.
5  Resize and format the image to the size needed for your print size.
6. And finally you get the canvas print to enjoy.

Does the finished canvas size reflect any sort of border?  -In other words, is a 8x10 is actually a 5x7 photo with a 3" border?

No surprises here. A 20x24 is a 20x24.  No borders unless that is what you want. (There may be a 1/16 to 3/8” inch overflow on the edge of the frame after stretching. This is due to the material giving slightly during the process.) The prints is hand stretched onto a standard stretcher bar and stapled on the sides - ready for framing.

Is there any way to not have the staples show on the sides?

Yes, we can do what is referred to as a "Gallery Wrap" which is the process of pulling the canvas to the back of a stretcher bar and stapling it there. This eliminates the need for a frame if so desired.

How do I care for the canvas print?

Once it is framed your canvas print should be treated as you would any piece of fine art. Do not position where it will be near direct sunlight. Do not try to clean with water, glass cleaner, or any other liquids. Use a soft dust brush.

How do I send my photo?

Prints and artwork should be sandwiched between cardboard. Slides, transparencies, and negatives should be protected adequately for mailing. Bubble envelopes work pretty good. Once in our hands, your photo will receive utmost professional care and will be returned with your order.

What about digital photos?

We also accept digital image files on CD, Zip cartridge, or diskette. You can also send your file attached to an email or ask about upload page

Also wanted to be sure I can have a color photo made black & white at no additional charge, as well as minor touching of mild smile creases at the eye?

Yes, color or black and white is the same price. As mentioned before we do a bit of clean up at no charge for most jobs. It really depends on how much time needs to be spent to achieve the desired results. Again, nothing is charged to you until you ok it.

What if I want more reprints later will I have to send back the same file or photograph?

We archive your digital images for 90 day storage. During that period you can simply contact us for additional prints as needed.

What photos can I enlarge?

Any photographs can be submitted for enlargement. The larger and sharper the image, the better the outcome. Remember that the small marks and scratches on the photograph may be magnified - but we'll do our best to clean these out.

What fine arts can I enlarge?

Any of your treasured fine arts can be submitted for reproduction/enlargement. We encourage you to send us only a digital file of the fine art you'd like us to reproduce, for obvious reasons. Archive Angel is NOT responsible for copyright issues.

Are the colors of the canvas photo near or like the original?

All of our equipment is kept constantly calibrated and color managed to bring you the closest possible match!

How do these prints compare to the competition?

Very competitive Considering the above mentioned quality of our print technology as well as high resolution film and print scanning. Keep this in mind when you are shopping prices.

What if I don't like the print or it isn't what I expected?

If the problem is ours, we will correct it and replace the print. If we are working from a low quality original print we will let you know what to expect in a photo enlargement.  If you'd like we can send a low resolution proof by e-mail for color corrections and retouching issues.

Do you have another means of contacting yourself?  I would feel more comfortable speaking on the telephone with someone should I have any other questions/concerns etc.

Yes of course – all of our contact information is located at the bottom of most of the pages here. Just give us a call or we can make arrangements to call you. We do most of our communicating via e-mail as to keep our overhead and prices low!

What Is A Giclée Print?

Giclée is a French word and means "the spraying of paint". A term used today, to refer to a unique printing technology. Giclée prints are known to be used by Museums to display works of art, normally kept in the museums basement vaults. A Giclée Print is simply the closest duplication of an original artwork that is humanly, mechanically, or technically possible

The Process

At first, in order to create the highest quality edition possible, the original artwork is transferred to a high resolution digital file in a digital scanner.

The inks used in this process are especially formulated for fine art printing offering a wide gamut and a high UV-resistance. The subtleties and nuances of an original artwork are captured by the preciseness of the printer along with the depth of the color range. MUSEUM QUALITY means 70 years light-fastness under museum archival conditions. Independent third-party tests have provided life time estimates of 100 years for pigment-based inks.

Unlike other reproduction methods such as lithography or four-color printing, each Giclée' print is individually sent to the ink jet printer. This gives each print personal attention to the quality . The resolution and color can be brilliant and most often will be better than lithographs.
